When sharp-tongued newspaperman Robert McAlden arrives at Selwyn Hall, he expects to find a vast library, an impossible deadline, and an insufferable aristocrat. He is right about the library.
Under the terms of an eccentric will, Robert and Lord Frederick Ashcombe have six months to catalogue thousands of books and papers if they are to inherit the Selwyn estate. Robert is brisk, skeptical, and determined to get on with the work. Frederick is shy, scholarly, particular in his habits – and far more difficult for Robert to dislike than he ought to be.
As autumn turns to winter, their days settle into a rhythm of books and letters, shared meals, country walks, arguments, illness, and quiet companionship. Somewhere along the way, the work that brought them together becomes less important than the prospect of having to part.
